Punctuation Tips How to Use Commas - Proofread My Paper
Punctuation Tips How to Use Commas - Proofread My Paper Punctuation Tips: How to Use Commas For such a common punctuation mark, commas cause a lot of confusion. But there are some rules for how commas should be used. These rules arenââ¬â¢t rigid: Itââ¬â¢s a matter of style to some degree, and the important thing is that your writing is clear and easy to read. However, if you use commas along the following lines, youââ¬â¢ll be on the right track! 1. Commas in Lists One important use of commas is to separate items in a list of three or more things. US English typically uses a serial comma before the final item: My favorite bands are Toto, ELO, and REO Speedwagon. In British English, however, the serial comma is often omitted. 2. After Introductory Words or Clauses A comma should be used to separate introductory words or phrases from the main clause in a sentence. These tend to be terms or phrases that modify or frame the sentence: As a solo artist, Kenny Loggins is best known for the song ââ¬Å"Footloose.â⬠Few things are more 80s than the Loggins.(Image: Surian Soosay/flickr) 3. After a Coordinating Conjunction When joining two independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction (i.e., ââ¬Å"and,â⬠ââ¬Å"but,â⬠ââ¬Å"for,â⬠ââ¬Å"nor,â⬠ââ¬Å"or,â⬠ââ¬Å"so,â⬠or ââ¬Å"yetâ⬠), they should be separated with a comma: I have every Boz Scaggs album, but I donââ¬â¢t have any albums by the Steve Miller Band. This only applies when linking clauses that could work as sentences by themselves, though, not whenever a coordinating conjunction is used. 4. Parenthetical Commas Parenthetical commas set apart non-essential information in a sentence. This often occurs mid-sentence: Daryl Hall, best known as one half of Hall Oates, has released several solo albums. But parenthetical information can also come at the end of a sentence: ââ¬Å"Rickrollingâ⬠is named after Rick Astley, whose song ââ¬Å"Never Gonna Give You Upâ⬠was a number one hit in 25 countries. 5. Setting Apart a Contrast When adding a contrast at the end of a sentence, set it apart with a comma: The Eagles played classic rock, not heavy metal. You cant play heavy metal sitting down.(Photo: Rachel Kramer/wikimedia) 6. Separating Coordinate Adjectives When using multiple adjectives to modify a single noun, you should separate coordinate adjectives with commas. Commas arenââ¬â¢t required when adjectives arenââ¬â¢t coordinate. Coordinate adjectives are equally-weighted in how they modify a noun. You can test whether adjectives are coordinate by either changing their order or adding ââ¬Å"andâ⬠between them: Pat Benatar is a talented, successful musician. Pat Benatar is a successful, talented musician. Pat Benatar is a successful and talented musician. These all sound okay because ââ¬Å"successfulâ⬠and ââ¬Å"talentedâ⬠are coordinate adjectives. If we do the same thing with adjectives that arenââ¬â¢t coordinate (e.g., ââ¬Å"successfulâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Americanâ⬠), the sentences sound wrong: Pat Benatar is a successful American musician. ââ¬â Correct Pat Benatar is an American successful musician. ââ¬â Incorrect Pat Benatar is a successful and American musician. ââ¬â Incorrect This is because ââ¬Å"Americanâ⬠is more important to the identity of the noun in this sentence. 7. Introducing a Quotation A comma is used to introduce a quotation when it follows from the rest of a sentence, particularly after terms like ââ¬Å"saidâ⬠or ââ¬Å"wroteâ⬠: Jon Bon Jovi said, ââ¬Å"Success is falling nine times and getting up ten.â⬠However, no comma is needed when the quote follows the word ââ¬Å"thatâ⬠: Jon Bon Jovi said that ââ¬Å"Success is falling nine times and getting up ten.â⬠Here seen about to swallow a microphone.(Photo: Artur Bogdanski/wikimedia) 8. Direct Address Finally, when something is directly addressed to someone else, we separate the name of the addressee from the main statement with a comma: Before: Derek, are you listening to Def Leppard? After: Are you listening to Def Leppard, Derek? This particularly applies when writing dialogue, so itââ¬â¢s relevant when writing fiction.

Write a cover letter to get you hired in 2018
Write a cover letter to get you hired in 2018 When you see the phrase ââ¬Å"cover letter,â⬠it probably conjures up an image of a bygone era, with an old-fashioned letter, painstakingly typed and sent via snail mail. How does that square with the modern job search, which has become almost entirely digital? Do you still need a cover letter in an era where youââ¬â¢re either emailing a resume or dropping it into a vast database? The short, honest answer: not always, especially when youââ¬â¢re simply uploading your resume into a digital application engine. But when you do need to have a cover letter to go with your resume, itââ¬â¢s important to have one ready to go. And a well-written cover letter can still mean the difference between getting an interview or having a reader reject your application package without any further consideration.Whatââ¬â¢s the purpose of a cover letter?A cover letter is an introduction to your resume. If youââ¬â¢re submitting your resume digitally, that means your cover letter is an em ail introduction with an attachment. Instead of a blunt ââ¬Å"here you go, resume is attached,â⬠itââ¬â¢s a way of framing your resume and setting the narrative before the reader has a chance to scan the resume itself.A cover letter (or email) is also a chance to fit in some extra key words. Thereââ¬â¢s a good chance that it will be a software program reading your note first, before itââ¬â¢s screened by a human with hiring power. And those programs function based on key words and phrases that the hiring company most wants to see. The earlier you can fit those in, the better, and the cover letter/email is your earliest chance.A cover letter also acknowledges the human reader beyond the robot eyes- a human reader who can use the information in your note to add context to your resume. Your cover letter is a chance to set the narrative that you support with the bullet points in your resume. Think of it as the highlight reel of your accomplishments and your goals.Tailor yo ur cover letter to the audience. The first thing you should do is make sure youââ¬â¢re personalizing the cover letter. Nothing is going to turn a reader off faster than having to read something addressed to ââ¬Å"Dear whomeverâ⬠and followed by several paragraphs of super-generic chitchat. Whenever possible, you should address it to a specific person. This may not always be possible if youââ¬â¢re submitting via an online system. But if thereââ¬â¢s a contact name mentioned in the job posting, make sure youââ¬â¢re addressing your letter or email right to that person. You want to engage the reader whenever possible. ââ¬Å"To whom it may concernâ⬠technically does the job of addressing a reader, but is there a colder, more generic opening? I donââ¬â¢t think so.Be memorable and personable. The cover letter gives you a chance you donââ¬â¢t really have with your resume: the opportunity to show a bit of your personality. The resume is a ruthless, efficient snapsh ot of your professional accomplishments. The cover letter is more of a conversation between you and the reader. One way to do this is to include some personal trivia in the first few lines, or include a bit about what drew you do this particular company or job opening. This shows that thereââ¬â¢s a thoughtful person behind this letter and this resume, one who has put consideration and effort into applying for this job.In a cover letter, itââ¬â¢s okay to use a bit of humor- as long as itââ¬â¢s kept polite, professional, and directly related to the job youââ¬â¢re trying to get. (Remember, you donââ¬â¢t know who will be on the other end, so keep any humor G-rated and appropriate.) The company is, after all, hiring a human to join their team, and you want to seem approachable and friendly. The information on your resume doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily tell the reader much about your voice, so itââ¬â¢s okay to use the cover letter to add a bit of flair.Set the narrative. This is especially important if your resume has things you need to explain, or things you want to gloss over (it happens). Your cover letter can help you take that extra level of control over your application package. Use it to set up what you want the reader to have in mind while he or she is reading further. For example, if youââ¬â¢re a recent grad and donââ¬â¢t yet have tons of experience in the field youââ¬â¢re trying to get into, you can use your cover letter to talk about how youââ¬â¢re looking for an entry-level position in the field, but have skills and experience that youââ¬â¢ve built up via internships, or volunteer experiences. Or if you have resume gaps, itââ¬â¢s a way of saying that youââ¬â¢re looking to get back in the game, and that youââ¬â¢re ready and eager for an opportunity to use your skills and experience at X company.Make it about the job/company.The cover letter is (spoiler alert!) not really about you. Sure, it seems that way because youâ⠬â¢re talking about yourself, but itââ¬â¢s really about the job the company is trying to fill and how you can meet that need. The ultimate goal of the cover letter is to support your statement that youââ¬â¢re the one they need to fill this job. Every detail you offer about yourself should show how youââ¬â¢re a good fit for the company. This is where the job description comes in handy- you can use that information to figure out what they want the new employee to accomplish in this role and then make sure youââ¬â¢re presenting skills and achievements that support those needs. For example, instead of saying something like, ââ¬Å"This role is the logical next step for me because Iââ¬â¢ve always wanted to be a director,â⬠you should go with, ââ¬Å"my time spent spearheading complex projects and delivering results ahead of schedule has prepared me for the demands of leading a team of sales associates.â⬠Keep your formatting flexible. In your cover letter, you don ââ¬â¢t want to include fancy or complicated formatting because you canââ¬â¢t assume that itââ¬â¢s being read one particular way. In 2018, you need to be format-flexible. Your reader might be reading it on a computer screen, as a print-out, or on a small device like a phone or tablet. That means the simpler your cover letter is, the better. Pick a professional font thatââ¬â¢s easy to read, make sure your paragraphs arenââ¬â¢t 15 sentences of unbroken text, and make everything left-aligned.If your cover letter is really an email, itââ¬â¢s fine to use the default font and text settings in your email client.Donââ¬â¢t write a novel. The cover letter should only be a few straightforward paragraphs. This is not the time to write out your entire work history (the resume will do the job of talking about past experience and accomplishments). The goal is to introduce yourself to the reader, not publish your memoir. Three to four paragraphs should do the trick- no more than a single page in Word. This is the basic format you should use:Brief intro paragraph: Who you are as a professional, what job youââ¬â¢re applying for, and what drew you to this particular job opening.Paragraph outlining your top qualifications for this specific job.Brief closing paragraph: Restate what qualifies you for the job and provide contact information.Closing sign-off: Always be brief and polite. (ââ¬Å"Sincerelyâ⬠is a classic for a reason!)Letââ¬â¢s look at an example of a basic cover letter/email.Dear Ms. Ferguson,à As a lifelong bookworm with a passion for the inner workings of the publishing industry, Iââ¬â¢m interested in your opening for an editorial assistant. Iââ¬â¢m currently an administrative assistant at the Good Books Literary Agency, and would like to bring my ninja-level organizational skills and editorial eye to the books on B.K. Publisherââ¬â¢s list.Through my work at the agency and an internship with American Book Company, Iââ¬â¢ve developed a keen sense for identifying potentially successful books, and working with authors to refine their manuscripts from rough drafts to final. I have extensive experience proofreading and copyediting manuscripts, writing copy, and liaising between authors and publishers. I am confident that my ability to work with authors of all temperaments, as well as develop their work with an eye toward the marketplace, would be a good fit for B.K. Publisher. Iââ¬â¢m attaching my resume, and welcome discussing my qualifications in more detail. I can be reached at JaneQPublic@emaildomain.gov, and I look forward to hearing more about this position.à Sincerely,Jane Publicà When youââ¬â¢re writing your cover letter, remember that itââ¬â¢s an opportunity- not a throw-away. If you put in some time and energy, it can be a boon to your total application and work perfectly with your resume to create an image of someone who would be a good all-around fit for this job.

Summary of fixed income securities Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Summary of fixed income securities - Essay Example Debt securities have two essential components namely interest and principle. Fixed income securities which fall in the category of debt includes bonds, mortgage-backed securities, asset-backed securities and bank loans. Preferred stock obligations can be defined as the stock in which the investors gain ownership interests in an organization. Fixed dividends are paid to the stock holders out of the profits which are earned by the company. Preferred stock holders are different from the common stock holders as they do not have voting rights. Preferred stock holders only can realize fixed dividends at periodical intervals. However, preference stock holders are given more priority when it comes to payment of dividends as compared to common stock holders. If a company becomes bankrupt, the obligations to preference stock holders are cleared off first. Considering such aspects associated with preferred stock, they are termed as form of equity having characteristic features which are similar to bonds (Barnhill Jr and Maxwell 347). Treasury bonds- They are also referred to as government bonds as the federal government of a nation issues such bonds. The government is expected not to default the payments associated with such bonds. Hence, the risks associated with such bonds are perceived to be low. However, since the price of such bonds may fall if the rate of interest rises, they are not completely riskless. Corporate bonds- Such bonds are issued by business organizations. Unlike government bonds, corporate bonds are exposed to high default risks. If the issuing company does not earn adequate profits or is suffering huge losses, it may not be able to make timely payments to the bondholders. The default risks which are associated with the bonds may range on the basis of the characteristics of the company and the terms of the bond. Such default risks are

Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness :: Essays Papers
Heart of Darkness ââ¬Å"A Worn Pathâ⬠is a story of an old womanââ¬â¢s enduring courage, and strength, despite scores of obstacles. It begins on a ââ¬Å"bright frozen day in the early morning.â⬠Phoenix Jackson is making a strenuous journey across a wintry countryside to acquire medicine for her grandson who is chronically ill. She was ââ¬Å"very old and small and/she carried a thin small cane made from an umbrella.â⬠This clearly shows the reader that she is not suited for this arduous excursion. However, she has made the same trip a countless amount of times. The author uses Phoenixââ¬â¢s story to represent a journey of life. Her unwillingness to immediately reveal the purpose of the journey allows the reader to interpret this as a general journey without a specific purpose, just as life is often referred to as a journey whose reason is unknown. The obstacles she runs across in her travels represent the problems that one might have to face in life. Welty wants the reader to focus on Phoenix, her journey, and the obstacles that get in her way; because it is through the story of this journey that the author coveys her message, showing Phoenixââ¬â¢s sheer will and determination to endure, no matter what hardship presents itself to her. Throughout the entirety of the story, the author uses the third person limited omniscient point of view. This serves to give the other characters in the story less dimension, and thus, less importance, so that Phoenix is the only character that is fully developed. With this point of view, her physical characteristics are described, in depth, in the beginning of the story through the narrator. Sensuous imagery is used to put a brilliant picture of Phoenix in the mind of the reader. ââ¬Å"Her eyes were blue with age. Her skin had a pattern all its own of numberless branching wrinkles.â⬠This passage is exemplary of Weltyââ¬â¢s exceptional ability to captivate oneââ¬â¢s interest through use of diction. The characteristics of her personality are also depicted mainly through the readerââ¬â¢s experience of her actions, words, thoughts, and interactions with the other characters. This is the main reason that the other characters are a necessity. The hunter tries to persuade Phoenix to go home. He represents those in life who try to stand in the way and discourage people from fulfilling their goals. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Studying Abroad
AdvantagesNowadays, studying abroad brings people many advantages. First of all, it is undeniable that thanks to learning in foreign countries, they can improve their English. It is mainly due to the living environment there, where people have more exposure to English. Every day communicating with the native in the language is the chance for them to reinforce their English skills. Secondly, living independently is another thing people can gain after being overseas. In fact, when studying abroad, people cannot rely on anyone but themselves, and they have to solve all their problems. It makes them get used to being independent. The quality is absolutely helpful in both their life and work nowadays. Last but not least, studying overseas also gives people more opportunities to find jobs. It is not only because of their good English skills but also the certificates they have got in foreign universities, which are highly appreciated in our country today. In short, studying abroad is a good choice for people today, especially the young.DisadvantagesStudying abroad is also disadvantageous to people for some reasons. First of all, it is undoubted that culture shock will happen when everyone is overseas. They can find the nativeââ¬â¢s behaviours, speeches and so on absolutely strange the first time in foreign countries. This makes the people totally confused and annoyed. Therefore, they can easily lose concentration on study when having culture shock. Secondly, homesickness is what people cannot avoid when studying abroad. This is because they have to live far from home in the different living environment. In addition, they also always have to solve problems by themselves. All of these make them miss their families more than ever before and lessen their enthusiasm in learning. Last but not least, people also may have to learn under pressure while being abroad due to the big amount of money they spend on studying overseas. They always have to care for their marks at scho ol for fear of not getting good certificate. As a result, they can be stressed, and their life overseas can become a nightmare. In short, studying abroad brings people both advantages and disadvantages, so everyone should think carefully before deciding to do this.
